  • Sew a T-Shirt

    Discover the joy of sewing with stretchy fabrics in this beginner-friendly workshop! Learn how to create a classic t-shirt from start to finish. You'll master key techniques such as sewing with knits, installing a neckband, and creating a polished hem. While all steps can be done on a regular sewing machine, you'll also have the opportunity to try a serger (overlock machine) for extra finesse on your seams. It's the perfect chance to dip your toes into sewing with stretchy materials and walk away with a handmade t-shirt you'll love to wear. - All materials provided. - Use our machines or bring your own (must know how to operate your machine). Pre-requisite or skills required: - Intro to Garment Sewing Workshop at Small Space OR these skills: - Basic garment sewing skills including how to thread a sewing machine, how to sew and finish seams, how to wind bobbins, how to change needles, how to read a sewing pattern and select your size, how to cut a pattern out of fabric, how to finish a seam. This workshop is designed for age 13 up. This is a very small group workshop with only 5 participants. What You'll Learn: - How to knit a center-out circular base using the Magic Loop technique - An elegant eyelet stitch pattern for the bag body - How to make sleek and sturdy i-cord straps This project is ideal for knitters who are confident with the basics and ready to expand their skills. The finished bag is soft, compact, and thoughtfully designed for everyday use. We will have optional modifications to adapt this workshop to easier or more advanced.   • Kids Intro to Abstract Art

    Students will be challenged to think outside of the box using multiple tools to create 2 pieces of art using “anything but a brush”! Ages 7-11 About The Instructor Ashley holds a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design and previously worked in fashion design and graphic design for Limited Brands and later as a freelancer focused in print design. When her oldest daughter started in kindergarten she quickly realized there wasn’t art in elementary schools and started a PTA sponsored recess art program that now sees 150 students a week at one of the local public schools. (prop 28 has slowly began to put art back into elementary schools) She distinctly remembers how much her public school art (visual, music and dance) programs impacted her life. She hopes to share that same passion and inspiration with the next generation of creatives.

  • Learn to Knit - Chunky Beanie - Feb 2025

    Join us for a cozy and creative knitting experience and learn to make your very own chunky beanie in just two sessions! Never knit before? This workshop is for you! We will guide you through all the essential knitting techniques needed to complete a warm, stylish beanie you’ll love. Schedule: When: Two consecutive Thursday evenings, 5:00–6:30 PM (check the calendar) Where: Small Space Art Collective, San Clemente What You’ll Learn: Session 1: Learn a beginner-friendly cast-on technique, the knit stitch, and how to turn your work. Between classes, you’ll practice at home and complete most of your beanie. Session 2: Wrap up your project by finishing the knitting, binding off, sewing your beanie together, and weaving in the ends.   • Hanging Art Mobile Making Workshop

    We'll start with the basics of wire bending & quickly jump into balance (you'll be amazed at the key to the first balanced pieces), & from there, it's a breeze to build your first 5 piece mobile. You can keep adding on to your mobile, time and inspiration permitting. We'll have a variety of shapes & colors (wood and acrylics cut prior to class on a laser cutter), and all the wire and hand tools you need. Rebecca will also provide information about how to create mobiles from your own collected treasures (shells, driftwood)...and with this info, the sky is the limit (literally) as to what hanging mobile art you'll create next! Hanging Art Mobile Making Workshop is limited to 8 participants. This workshop is suitable for adults and teens This workshop is taught by local artist and maker Rebecca Barry. Rebecca is your guide in mobile making and more! A dreamer & maker who loves to discover, design & innovate.   • Ice Dye & Shibori (Tie Dye)

    Create magical Ice Dyed bamboo socks and a gorgeous Shibori patterned bandana while learning the basics of using non-toxic fiber reactive dyes and techniques from artist Rachael Duran of Thunder Textile. In this combo class you will learn about the magical world of ice dyeing and explore the art of shibori. We will cover how to create an ice dye set-up, working with non-toxic fiber reactive dyes and how to achieve the results you desire. Each participant will ice dye a pair of bamboo socks and a bandana. While we wait for the ice to melt we'll move onto shibori, a dyeing technique that involves twisting, tying, gathering or folding and binding fabric in a certain way before it is dyed, creating a unique pattern that results from only allowing the dye to penetrate certain portions of the fabric. Each participant will use two bandanas and a drawstring bag to dye and we will be using non-toxic indigo fiber reactive dye. Limited to 8 participants for a fun and intimate experience. For adults and teens when accompanied by an adult. Rachael Duran is the owner/maker at thunder textile. Her interests include macrame, printmaking, marbling, and knitting but her true passion is working with dye. She’s a self taught dyer and works exclusively with natural fiber textiles. Whenever she’s not starting a new project or tackling a new craft she’s having fun with her husband and daughter.

  • Book Binding

    A book serves as a unique vessel to hold ideas, dreams, and reflections written, drawn, and saved. In this workshop, join Kristianne Riddle as you create a small hardcover, cloth-bound, Coptic book that lays flat when opened -- perfect to use as a photo album, sketchbook, or notebook. Expand your understanding of the bookbinding process, learn an easy multiple-signature binding technique, and walk away with a carefully crafted bound object ready to accept your artistry or give as a gift. All materials for creating the book will be provided (paper, cloth, glue, thread). If you've taken a bookbinding class before, bring your awl + bone folder! (We will have extras for you to borrow if needed). Have a marbled or decorative paper you’d like to use? Wondering what to do with that cotton fabric you’ve been saving? Bring it along to incorporate into the cover. The fabric patterns being provided for cloth cover options were designed by Kristianne using her own dreamy photographs. About the Teacher Kristianne is a lens-based artist captivated by photography, sculpture, and book art. Common themes in her work include personal narrative and the intersection between environment and motherhood. She graduated BFA in Photography from CSULB. Since then, she has been a professor at CSUF, held photography workshops, received recognition from Luerzer’s Archive Magazine, Communication Arts Magazine. and was a Critical Mass finalist. Her work has been exhibited around the United States in solo and group shows and she works with corporate clients creating work for advertising campaigns. When she's not in her studio or on assignment, she is exploring the California coast by sailboat with her husband and teenage children. Kristianne and her family are currently refitting a 46’ Kelly Peterson sailboat to sail to the Sea of Cortez and beyond. Balancing her thirst for adventure, freedom, and spontaneity while settling down to raise a family has heavily influenced her work. She is currently nestled into her hometown, for now, to be with family.
